Our love affair with the Algarve started purely by chance.
We were hoping to go to Turkey for a holiday but couldn't get into the hotel we wanted, so by chance we ended up in the Algarve.
As keen golfers, one of the golf courses we played was Boavista. We had never heard of Boavista (it is one of golf's best kept secrets) and were mind blown with its beauty, not just of the golf course but of the resort itself. In fact we liked it so much, we went along to the sales office in the afternoon and bought our first property, our apartment, that very day.
Having spent a couple of years enjoying that as our holiday home, we had no intention of buying any other property in Portugal. Until luck took its toll again.
We were driving around the area one hot sunny afternoon and saw a very long white wall, interspersed with one of the most beautiful entrances we have ever seen, on which hung a 'se vende' (for sale) sign on the electric gates. From the road, we couldn't see the property at all, but were intrigued by its name, Quinta Caroline. That being my name, we decided to investigate, phoned the number on the sign and made an appointment to view the next day.
We were flabbargasted, as were our friends, Doug and Mo, that we took with us. Behind that wall was the most fabulous villa and gardens we had ever seen in Portugal. Having been impressed with that, we decided that we would purchase it. And you've guessed it, not being terribly patient people, we shook hands on the deal that very afternoon.
But that wasn't all. The owner then took us to see another property, Quinta Melody. Built in the same traditional Portuguese style as Quinta Caroline and again with stunning tropical gardens (Quinta in Portuguese meaning 'estate' of the grand type!), we thought this was wonderful too. What we hadn't realized, that on agreeing to buy Quinta Caroline, we would also be the proud owners of Quinta Melody.
And that is how we came own such lovely homes in the Algarve which are furnished as our homes, and to which we welcome discerning holidaymakers and golfers to make their home from home when visiting the Algarve.
But the story didn't finish there. In our first season of welcoming paying guests to our homes, we exceeded those guests' expectations in terms of both the quality of the accommodation they stayed in, and the service they received from me in helping them choose and arrange their holidays.
On the back of our initial guests' experiences, they recommended their friends and family and very soon we were full not just for the summer season, but throughout the year.
Friends and neighbours in the area also started asking me if I would rent out their properties for them. For those owning homes that met my very high standards, I agreed and for those homes that didn't, I declined their offer (causing some friction along the way as you can imagine!)
